# 3 youtube videos-personal essays

This video showed qualities of a personal essay. I think one of his last lines saying that to know him you need to know his music is important. This person is showing who he is through music. I connected it to the story we read, Good Workers. In Good Workers the writer is describing himself and others by the work they do. He says he always wanted to play an instrument but then grew to hate it. He then moved to love the guitar and learned to love music again. I think that this is like Good workers also because in Good Workers it seems to me that the narrator wanted to be a good worker, but when he started washing trucks he didn’t like it, but then he moved to doing other things and was still a good worker.
This video was interesting to me. I thought because there were no words it wouldn’t work but after I watched the whole video I thought it showed a lot. I think that this video took you through what this kid went through. I think that his dad was in an accident, went on life support, and then died. This takes you through the steps. It also shows a flashback to when he was younger with his dad. This lets you see what this kid went through. It allows you to feel an experience that maybe you haven’t felt before, which is a characteristic of a personal essay.

Sara—these are really interesting pieces! Your connection to the “good workers” essay is right on. Here, it seems to me, the filmmaker finds himself in a different instrument. Do you think his question is something about the connection between identity and music?

I think the first film was a decent effort at a personal film. It was similar to Good Workers because the filmmaker talked about how important the guitar was and how to know him you have to know his music. I think it is great how different personal essays can be from each other.

I also picked this video. I thought that it was a good example of a personal essay. I never connected it to Good Workers, but I like your connection! I like how he reflected on first wanting to learn to play the cello, and then put all of his love from that (not ever really doing it) into his new love for the guitar. It really said a lot about him. I thought that the last line was really great to pull the whole video together.
